The People are Plenty and The Jobs Are Few

daniel adler's americaLast night we went to a Bushwick rooftop party. Everyone there was nice and interesting. There were many foreigners, Spaniards, Germans, Brits, good folks. Each one I asked how they like the United States. They mostly had only seen New York and were impressed with its cosmopolitanism, which I appreciated. They said that they expected people to be much more stupid, and I said, well this is one of the world’s greatest cities, after all, maybe in the middle of the country, in Nebraska, in the American South, people are more metropolitan, but here, well, you know.

American music, oh god, I’ve been havin some hard travelin woes. I’m-a-sittin in the kitchen, listenin to the American tunes, I’m so happy I could cry. I’m-a-buzzin from that caffeine high, well-rested, din’t move till I woke, fell sleep near sun-up, and time went crawlin by, reading Huck Finn, feelin alright (in America we can feel okay about usin it as one word, ain’t no need for propriety or pedantry cause our country is big and open and we’ll speak and talk the way we want, which is somethin I told my German friend Jan, we here in Amuricuh we’re more colloquial than them Britishers) and pickin up mah gee-tar, thinkin bout the Columbia River and the great West…
